The Cetra say Jenova went from planet to planet, leaving destruction in her wake. She is the 'Calamity from the Sky'.
She came to the Planet 1000 years ago, creating a huge crater now known as the Northern Crater either where she landed, or where she finally fought with Cetra. She pretended she came in peace so the inhabitants of the world at the time, the Cetra (Ancients as they are now called) would not rise up against her. She brought with her a disease (most likely a virus) which eventually killed many of the Cetra before they realised what Jenova had done.
When the Cetra realised that she had come to destroy them and their world, they used their combined powers to seal her in the Northern Crater. The Planet had already created WEAPONS in response to the threat, and with Jenova sealed, the WEAPONS remained dormant in the walls of the icy crater.
A thousand years later, Jenova was discovered by Professor Gast who initially thought she was an Ancient. The last remaining Ancient, Ifalna, told him otherwise and Gast ceased his research into Jenova. His successor, Hojo, had other ideas, and continued his research, seeing Jenova as his ticket to acclaim and success among his peers.
Hojo killed Gast and took his wife Ifalna and daughter Aeris hostage to conduct experiments on them as the last Ancients. He devised the SOLDIER genetic-enhancement program from his research on Jenova which seems to have been primarily conducted in Nibelheim. Jenova used everyone Hojo had implanted with her cells - including Sephiroth - to attempt to complete her mission, and destroy the Planet.
She has presumably been destroyed once and for all by Cloud Strife. |
