Author's Notes: This is a story I wrote right after hearing this song on the radio. I was driving home from bowling when inspiration hit, so it is needless to say, a little odd. My best friend helped me out with the beginning of this as well as the pairings (thanks, Loreno!). I made her a WuFei fan, though... (oops). So, anyway, this song is U2, off there new CD. I claim no ownership of the song or of Gundam Wing (Bandai and Sunrise). I do claim partial ownership of the story, along with my best friend. Be aware, this is a story about boys in love with other boys, and it is not without somewhat mature content. This is one for anyone whoever has had a broken heart.

Stuck In A Moment

By Link621

Someone had made a dire mistake up in the heavens when they planned the romance unfolding in Quatre Raberba Winner's life. Quatre rolled over in his bed, drawing his light blue comforter around him more. He could barely move in his little cocoon, but he didn't really care. He was focused on the sharp pain in his throat and the sting in his eyes. He had been crying all day, not to mention the night before. He was still yet to leave his bed. He was shaking too violently too support his own weight still.

"Damnit..." He whispered, feeling tears rise to the surface again. "What the hell is wrong with me? Since when did I care?" In his mind, images of Trowa began to haunt him- Trowa telling Quatre about his problems, Trowa smiling when Quatre looked at him, Trowa staring at him when he thought Quatre wouldn't notice, Trowa bending over...

Quatre buried his face in his pillow with a degenerative wail. He was just about to try to sleep again when there was a knock at the door that hopefully had nothing to do with Trowa. Without Quatre's consent, the knocker entered. As was to be suspected, it was Duo Maxwell. The braided boy had a sad smile on his face when he finally came to face Quatre by circling around the bed to face the opening of the blonde's cocoon. "Quatre... it is already nearly three in the afternoon. Shouldn't you get up?"

"Not today, Duo, I don't feel well." Quatre pulled the comforter over his head entirely to create a barrier so he didn't have to see the concern in Duo's eyes. The last thing he wanted to face was the caring he would see there.

"Quatre... you can't seriously still be this upset about Trowa!"

//I'm not afraid of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard//

There was a long pause while Duo grumbled about how stupid and foolish Quatre was being. Quatre broke the silence by suddenly, abruptly, breaking out of his little shell to stand up. He managed to fall on his face first, but still refused the outstretched arm from Duo. The little blonde, wearing only a pair of boxers, crossed the room to his desk. Duo commented, "My God, Quatre, you are sweating like a pig. Why didn't you take the comforter off?"

Quatre had been way too hot when he was in the comforter, but he had still been shivering. His body was now frigid, but it felt wonderful, even though it made a lump form in his stomach. He ignored Duo and reached for the papers strewn across his desk. All of them were leaves of sheet music. He picked up one, Swan Lake's first movement, and gestated with it as he spoke. "Duo, I love to play both piano and violin, as you know. But... after that one day... my melodies on their own are empty. I just want to find a song that has no need for harmony..."

Duo looked at the score. It was a violin and flute duet. "Oh... Quatre..."

//I'm just trying to find a decent melody
A song that I can sing in my own company//

Duo frowned and crossed the room with a look on his face that might even scare off the perfect soldier. "Quatre, you can't still be thinking about Trowa! So he turned you down... so what? There are plenty more guys out there to be looking at, Quatre!" Duo put one hand on either side of his friend's shoulders. "Take a look in the mirror, man. You are falling apart. Crying over him isn't getting you anywhere."

Duo's words stung. Quatre glared at him with contempt-only because he knew the other boy was right. The blonde walked back over to his dresser and pulled out a pair of cargo khakis and a cerulean T-shirt and pulled them on before walking out the sliding glass door of his bedroom to pace into the garden. "Don't think I don't know that, Duo!"

The brunette just watched his friend go, sighing sadly. Quatre was strong, but he would only be able to dwell over this for so long. It was time for him to forget about Trowa and move on. Duo had learned that lesson the hard way while waiting on Heero Yuy.

//I never thought you were a fool
But darling, look at you
You gotta stand up straight, carry your own weight
These tears are going nowhere, baby //

Quatre walked quickly, ignoring the lump in his throat. He absolutely refused to start crying again. The blonde had made it to the fountain before he had to just sit down to think. He threw a penny into the water sans wish. "It isn't worth it," Quatre mumbled to himself. "What the hell is wrong with me?" He looked at his reflection in the water and frowned. "You're in love. How pathetic-you are stuck on the idea that he will come around. Wake up, Winner."

Quatre threw his whole wallet in the fountain. "I think that earns a wish." He grinned. "I wish that I can forget about Trowa and his little Heero fetish. What is it that Heero has that makes everyone fall in love with him." Quatre shook his head violently. "Damnit, Winner, stop it!" He stormed back toward the house.

//You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment and now you can't get out of it//

Duo watched Quatre go for a moment before hiding his face in his own hands and dropping back to the bed. He had promised himself that with time, he would forget Heero and that he would ultimately be happier with WuFei anyway. Than why was he crying now? He was still stuck on the idea that Heero might love him in return. He was with WuFei, but his dreams had never changed. Duo felt weaker than WuFei could even imagine a woman being. He was too weak to tell Heero, so he just ran to WuFei.

Duo smiled sadly at his hands. Was his advice to Quatre really sound?

//Don't say that later will be better now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it//

Trowa glanced over to put a face to the footsteps approaching the hot tub. "Are you gonna join me? If so, you might wanna trade the spandex in for a pair of trunks, or something..." Trowa smiled a little at Heero. The quiet boys always were more talkative around eachother where they always felt they could speak up.

"I wasn't going to join you." Heero's English was accented heavily from Japanese decent. "I wanted to come talk to you about leaving the hot tub. You must be a prune in there after two hours. Are you okay, Trowa? Is there something going on?" Heero put a hand on Trowa's forehead. "Are you sick?" The perfect soldier pushed back Trowa's bangs to look into both emerald eyes.

"I..." Trowa took Heero's hand. They had secretly been lovers the previous four months, but recently broken up when Trowa decided he couldn't take anymore of being with Heero when he was so close to Quatre. The clown was desperately and fruitlessly in love. "Thank you for your worry, Heero. This must be harder on you... I mean, I did just dump you for this boy I am suddenly feeling all angsty about. I am a little surprised you are trying to let me talk to you..."

//I will not forsake, the colors that you bring
But the nights you filled with fireworks
They left you with nothing//

Heero smiled back at Trowa, his hand moving to cup the other boy's chin. "Trowa, I am trying my best to get over you entirely. Please, don't make it any harder than it already is." Heero tilted his love's chin up a little. "Amazing," he commented looking into Trowa's eyes, "Your eyes enchant me even more now they did before." He leaned in a little. "And in your eyes I can see the same pain as the pain I feel. That is why I can understand you." Heero leaned down farther, as if for a kiss.

Trowa lightly put his fingers to Heero's lips, pushing Heero back very gently. "Heero... Thank you." Trowa stood, climbing out of the hot tub, not taking his eyes off Heero. "I think I know what to do, now." Trowa then turned and headed back toward the house.

Heero just frowned. "Glad I could help, Trowa," he grumbled.

//I am still enchanted by the light you brought to me
I listen through your ears, and through your eyes I can see //

WuFei watched Duo storm through the dining room with an eyebrow raised. The braided boy was making a beeline for the refrigerator, and there really wasn't that much WuFei would be able to do to stop his lover. It was something about Heero again, no doubt. WuFei could stress enough to Duo that Heero was exactly what he didn't need in his life. Heero was all for Trowa, and Duo would only get hurt over and over like Quatre had.

Still... WuFei couldn't help but be a little jealous. Duo was going crazy about another boy while he was being otherwise loyal to WuFei. Sometimes the Chinese boy just wished that he could be the one that Duo was so concerned with. It seemed like no matter what, Duo just couldn't help but line up for more heartbreak.

"Oh brother," WuFei muttered to himself when Duo entered the dining hall with a foot-long sub sandwich. The Chinese boy asked quietly, "Hungry, dear?" Violet eyes met his gaze with sadness that WuFei couldn't even begin to understand. It truly was a sad day when even Duo Maxwell didn't want to joke around.

//And you are such a fool
To worry like you do
I know it's tough, and you can never get enough
Of what you don't really need now ... my oh my//

WuFei put a hand over Duo's and smiled at his lover. He got a very small smile in response. "You are still thinking of Heero? I'm sorry that he is still so upsetting to you, Duo. If there is anything I can..." WuFei's eyes went wide as suddenly Duo jumped into his arms. The boy settled into WuFei's lap with a serene smile. WuFei looked at him curiously. "Duo?"

"WuFei, thank you. I love you." Duo snuggled into WuFei more. It was the first time that the boy had ever said that he loved WuFei. It had always been WuFei to say that. Furthermore, he had called him 'WuFei', not one of his ridiculous nicknames.

WuFei smiled. At least they were on the right track. "I love you too, Duo."

//You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
Oh love look at you now
You've got yourself stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it //

Trowa dried his hair. How had he not seen it before? Quatre had been trying to tell him he was in love with Trowa that night, and Trowa had missed the hint entirely, the blockhead. Quatre had been testing the water to see if it was safe to swim, and Trowa had sent sharks after him. Trowa met his own green eyes in the mirror. He had made up his mind.

//I was unconscious, half asleep
The water is warm till you discover how deep//

Quatre had resolved to finally tell Trowa. He was looking at the door to Trowa's room with an arm up, ready to knock. He was going to have to go in head-first. He had to just come out and tell Trowa, or they might never have a chance. That was a double-edged-sword, though. If Trowa denied him forthright, he would have to face the greatest heartbreak he had known. Convincing himself he was prepared, Quatre's hand moved forward to knock, and collided instead with the cloth of a shirt. The door had already opened.

//I wasn't jumping for me it was a fall
It's a long way down to nothing at all //

The world seemed to come to a halt at the very moment. Quatre's lips quivered. Trowa opened his mouth as if to speak, so Quatre tried to beat him to it. In unison, they blurted out, "I love you!" Then there was a pause. A moment later they looked at eachother with mirrored confused expressions and both wondered aloud, "Huh?"

Then both smiled and threw their arms around eachother. They were too absorbed in the moment to notice Heero sneaking up from where he had been in his own room, and Duo and WuFei watching with grins on their faces from the stairway. When they boys met lips, the world did stop, for all they cared. For that fleeting moment, all was well.

//You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better now
You're stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it//

Trowa looked down at Quatre after breaking the kiss with a wide grin on his face. "No matter what, Quatre. I will love you. I promise I will be here for you in any situation." Trowa rested his forehead against Quatre's. "Forever and ever."

Duo's eyes sparkled, along with Quatre's. WuFei just shook his head.

//And if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if our way should falter
Along the stony pass //

Quatre finally responded, after a pause, "I will love you forever and ever, too, Trowa. You know I will always be here for you, even if as only a friend in the future. You mean so much to me, love." Duo's eyes continued to sparkle. Heero lost interest in the moment, retreating to his bedroom.

//And if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if your way should falter
Along the stony pass//

WuFei smiled to himself silently. He knew that love wasn't as unconditional as people were lead to believe. He knew that this romance between Quatre and Trowa was likely to end eventually and both would move on. In the cosmic scheme of things, it wasn't even a breath. But, even if only for a moment, It was always nice to see two people who were so in love find happiness.

//It's just a moment
This time will pass //

~~ The End ~~

Author's Notes: Thanks for reading, everyone. Tell me if you liked it. I have an idea for a sequel that I might write if anyone wants to hear it. It sorta involves Relena, though. It would also require me to make Heero bi and accept that beast-er-Relena. Anyway, thanks again!
